The Story Behind the Hope Prayer

Where Hope and Faith Meet in Prayer

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."
Philippians 4:6 (NIV)

Every ministry has a beginning.

For Girl… Pray!, that beginning is not a logo, a website, or even a prayer journal.

It is Philippians 4:6.

Long before Girl… Pray! was ever established, God was teaching me that prayer is His invitation to exchange anxiety for peace, worry for worship, and fear for faith. That truth became the foundation of everything that would come later.

Over the years, one simple phrase continued to settle deeply in my heart:

There's Hope in Every Prayer.

At first, I thought it was simply a tagline. Looking back now, I believe it was much more than that. It was the beginning of God revealing a lifelong lesson He had been teaching me about prayer.

A Foundation That Never Left

I accepted Christ as a teenager, but like many young people, there were still things I wanted to experience in the world. For a season, I went my own way.

Yet there was something that never left me.

Prayer.

Whether life was good or difficult, I found myself praying. I prayed prayers of thanksgiving and worship. I cried out for help, guidance, forgiveness, and deliverance. Even during seasons when my walk with God wasn't where it should have been, I discovered something remarkable:

God never stopped listening because He never stopped loving me.

Looking back, I can see that prayer became the thread God used to continually draw my heart back to Him.

When I rededicated my life to Christ as an adult, my hunger for God became greater than ever before. I spent countless hours in prayer, worship, and studying His Word. In fact, people sometimes ask me about television shows or popular music from the 1990s, and I honestly have very little recollection of them. Much of that season of my life was spent pursuing God instead.

Those years became a foundation that has carried me through every season since.

More Than Blank Pages

As my relationship with God deepened, so did my desire to encourage others in their own prayer lives.

That desire eventually led me to create the Girl… Pray! Prayer Journal.

As I worked on the journal, I knew I didn't want to simply provide blank pages for people to write prayer requests. I wanted to offer a biblical guide—something that would help believers approach God with confidence while still allowing prayer to remain deeply personal.

So I began reflecting on how I had prayed through the years.

I realized there had always been a pattern.

I always began by honoring God with praise and thanksgiving. Before asking Him for anything, I acknowledged who He is, holy, faithful, all-knowing, all-powerful, and worthy of worship.

Then I opened my heart before Him through confession and surrender, asking Him to search me, forgive me, and align my heart with His.

From there came petition, bringing every burden, concern, and request before my Heavenly Father, trusting that He welcomed every prayer.

The final step, however, was much harder to describe.

Finding the Language

For years, I naturally ended my prayers by praying God's Word back to Him.

I would declare His promises because I believed His Word is true. I believed that what God had spoken, He was faithful to accomplish.

I knew what I was doing.

I just didn't yet have language for it.

As I continued writing the prayer journal, the phrase God had already placed in my heart kept returning:

There's Hope in Every Prayer.

That simple statement unlocked something deeper.

I began thinking about the word HOPE, not simply as a beautiful message, but as a reflection of the way I had been praying for years.

The letters began to unfold naturally.

Honor.

Because every prayer begins by acknowledging who God is.

Open.

Because God desires honest, surrendered hearts.

Petition.

Because our Father invites us to bring every need before Him.

Three letters came easily.

But the fourth one took much longer.

I considered different words over time. I even tried different ideas in the journal. Yet none of them fully captured what happened at the close of prayer.

Then, as I reflected more deeply on praying God's promises back to Him, everything became clear.

The final step wasn't simply declaring Scripture.

It was leaving prayer with Expectation.

Not expectation rooted in my desires.

Expectation rooted in God's promises.

Where Hope and Faith Meet

As I continued studying Scripture, one truth became beautifully clear.

Hope and faith are inseparable.

Hope is born when we hear God's promises.

Faith embraces those promises and confidently trusts the One who made them.

That's when these words settled deeply into my heart:

Hope says, "God has promised."
Faith says, "I believe He will do what He has said."

That statement has become one of the defining truths of the HOPE Prayer.

Expectation is not wishful thinking.

It is not demanding a particular outcome.

It is not trying to convince God to answer according to our plans.

Expectation is resting confidently in the character of God, believing that He is faithful to every promise He has made.

Whether His answer is yes, no, or wait, our confidence remains in Him.

A Pathway, Not a Formula

Looking back now, I don't believe God simply gave me an acronym.

I believe He revealed a biblical pathway He had been teaching me throughout my life.

The HOPE Prayer is not a formula for getting God to answer our prayers.

It is not a checklist for earning His favor.

Through Jesus Christ, we already have access to the Father.

Instead, it is a simple, biblical pathway that helps us approach God intentionally, honoring Him, opening our hearts, presenting our petitions, and leaving His presence with hope-filled expectation because we trust His faithfulness.

There's Hope in Every Prayer.

Not because every prayer is answered exactly as we imagine.

But because every prayer is heard by a God who is faithful, loving, wise, and true to every promise He has made.

So wherever you find yourself today...

Come to Him.

Come with thanksgiving.

Come with honesty.

Come with your burdens.

Come with your questions.

Come with hope.

Come with faith.

The Father is listening.

And remember:

Hope says, "God has promised."
Faith says, "I believe He will do what He has said."

May your hope remain anchored in God's promises, your faith be strengthened by His faithfulness, and your prayer life draw you ever closer to the heart of the Father.
